FTIR-ATR

IR Spectroscopy Using ATR FTIR (Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared) has been added to our chemical analysis facilities– A SensIR TravelIR

An ATR-FTIR spectrometer

Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, is an analytical technique used to identify organic, polymeric, and, in some cases, inorganic materials. The FTIR analysis method uses infrared radiation to scan the sample, and during this process some of the radiation is absorbed. The absorbed radiation is converted into rotational and/or vibrational energy by the sample molecules. The return signal at the detector is displayed as a spectrum, typically from 4000 cm-1 to 400cm-1, representing a molecular fingerprint of the sample.  Each molecule or chemical structure will produce a unique spectral fingerprint, making FTIR analysis an excellent method for chemical identification.

ATR-FTIR spectroscopy is a modification of the basic FTIR method that uses total internal reflection of the infrared beam. This simplifies sample preparation and allows the analysis of liquids, powders, solids and gasses, which are simply pressed against the diamond surface.  ATR is now an established technique and can be used for the quality control by identifying any contamination of industrially manufactured material. ATR-FTIR can often serve as the first step in the material characterisation process. Other common applications of ATR FTIR chemical analysis include:

  • Identification of Unknown Substances
  • Identification of Fuel Contaminants
  • Identification of Oil Contaminants
  • Identification of Illegal Substances
  • Paint Characterization
  • Identification of Polymers
  • Quantification of Selected Components.
